ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS in the UK

Human Scale Education is working to encourage a more holistic and child-centred approach to education both within and outside the maintained sector. The charity supports groups of parents and teachers wishing to establish their own community-run small school or learning centre and is pressing for public funding for innovative educational projects. Over 30 alternative schools are members of Human Scale Education. www.hse.org.uk

Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship exists to support Steiner Waldorf Schools in the UK. These schools are based on the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, who saw education as a process of gradual awakening of the self. His philosophy is child-centred and based on his belief in the importance of childhood in determining how we live our lives. There are over 30 Steiner schools and 40 kindergartens in the UK. www.steinerwaldorf.org.uk

Montessori Centre International supports Montessori schools in the UK, of which there are over 700, mostly for early years education. The schools subscribe to the philosophy of Maria Montessori, an Italian doctor who believed that children are naturally motivated to learn. She developed a system to help them become independent and self-directed learners. www.montessori.ac.uk
